Rugby is very important for the College as being a boys school we want to achieve highly in NZ’s national game.
U12 – U18 rugby players participate in the Canterbury Metro rugby competition. The College First XV participates in the prestigious UC Championship (formerly known as the Press Cup). St Thomas’ is a very popular school for local and International students coming to play rugby. A rugby development program has been running since 2010 to help provide a pathway for students wanting to further their careers. The College boasts some fine talent which former All Black and Old boy, Mark Hammett, would be very proud of.
Rugby sevens is also becoming very popular at the College. Our sevens team has for the second year running gained entry into the National Condor Competition in Auckland. Old boy and current All-Black Sevens Star Sam Dickson is very proud of the way the College is performing…”the pride in St Thomas rugby has gone from strength to strength and i see a bright future ahead in both 7’s and 15’s…”
Playing for St Thomas’ can provide excellent opportunities for development, trips away, character building, playing in an elite competition and representative selection. All students who are talented or enjoy playing rugby should consider St Thomas of Canterbury College.
STC Rugby teams have been lucky to travel over time to destinations such as France & Italy. Currently future trips are being planned for South America and Japan in 2016-2018.
