On Thursday, 7 May, the wider Holy Family Parish community gathered at St Teresa’s Hall to farewell Father Philip after seven and a half years of dedicated service to the parish. During his time here, he also served as St Thomas of Canterbury College’s Chaplain, providing valued spiritual guidance to staff and students.
Father Philip departed on Monday, 11 May, returning to the United States for a period of sabbatical leave. Following this, he will continue his ministry in Cebu in the Philippines, often referred to as the “Queen City of the South.”
To honour his contribution, the Christian Brothers, Old Boys, past teachers, current teaching staff, and students presented Father Philip with a Māori carving. This special gift recognises his commitment and the lasting impact of his service to the College community.
The carving, known as a koru, is crafted from Oamaru limestone and pāua. Inspired by the unfurling frond of the silver fern, it symbolises new life, growth, strength, and peace.
Father Philip will be greatly missed by the College and parish communities.
