Junior School – End of Term Kaupapa

Junior Humanities – Years 7, 8 and 9:

Across all three year groups the focus for humanities has been around the theme of inclusivity and how, as students at St Thomas, we can show inclusive traits. This has included several tasks and learnings around Religious Education and the Beginnings of the Church in Aotearoa. From a social science lens, students have been learning about how New Zealand can be more inclusive by looking at its cultural and historic past. This is culminating with all students completing reading, writing, and speaking tasks throughout their learning. Over the next two weeks your son will be completing his Real Assessment Task through presenting his speech based on the theme and topic of inclusivity. There will also be a junior speech competition after this. There is also an inclusive film study based on the movies Invictus and Wonder.

Kinesiology across all three year groups has had a huge focus around Hauoratanga and educating our students through sport and health so they can be caring and lifelong leaders. There has been a key link to learning new and traditional sports and understanding the story and concept behind each sport. This has included sports such as AFL, Kilikiti, Ultimate Frisbee, Tupuae and Ki O Rahi. Year 9 classes will be partaking in a Ki O Rahi interclass tournament in the last week of the term. Within the health framework, students in Year 7 and 8 have been learning and developing skills around relationships and discussing topics of puberty and healthy habits and for our Year 9s, an introduction to sexuality. The real assessment tasks will be based around the new sports and skills and handed in on Week 9.
