During the winter break several STC men attended the New Zealand Physics and Maths Competition finals held at the University of Canterbury.
To qualify for the finals is no small effort, as it puts the boys in the top 1% of NZ students.
Their day involved a 1.5 hour exam and then after lunch a maths work shop on constructing fractal models (a Menger sponge – which is a shape with infinite surface area but a fixed volume!!!)
Although the boys didn’t place in the Top 10 of their division, it is still an awesome achievement!
Pictured are some of our juniors students – Joshua Glass, Marcus Quinanola, Sam Amaris and George Warren, along with senior student, Jack Walls. Other qualifiers, who couldn’t attend due to illness, were Will Floyd and Jeno Chae.
Well done to the boys for their dedication and efforts!
Thanks to Mrs June Chey for her time and work in helping prepare the boys for the competition with me.
