A New Chapter for St Thomas – Introducing Dowling House
At Prizegiving this year, we announced an exciting milestone for our kura, the introduction of a fifth house – Dowling House, named in honour of Brother Bill Dowling, whose extraordinary legacy of service continues to inspire us today.
This decision has been discussed with staff for some time and reflects our commitment to our strategic plan and our transition to a Year 9–13 school. We know this is a significant shift for our community. Houses hold deep meaning for families, and change can bring questions. But this is about creating the best environment for our boys – one where relationships are stronger, pastoral care is more personal, and every student feels truly known and supported.
Our mission remains clear, Educated Hearts and Educated Minds. Adding a fifth house will keep house numbers smaller, ensuring deeper connections and better support for academic, social, and pastoral needs. This is not just a structural change – it is an opportunity to grow our brotherhood and create a new legacy that future generations will look back on with pride.
The logistics of this move are that two Kotahitanga classes from each current house will move across to form Dowling House, and they will do so with their current teacher. This ensures continuity and care as we make this transition. An email will be sent to families directly impacted with further details and options.
Staff and students have shown great excitement about this development. We are thrilled to announce that Tom Feary will serve as the first student kaitiaki of Dowling House, a role that embodies leadership and service. This is a unique opportunity for our Kura to strengthen its sense of kotahitanga and continue building a community where every boy belongs.
Thank you for your ongoing support as we take this bold step forward. Together, we will ensure that this change reflects the values that make St Thomas of Canterbury College so special.
